The new standard for user instruction for machinery EN ISO 20607 has been listed in the Official Journal of the EU as a harmonised standard.

For years, standardization committees have been dealing with the topic of technical documentation and communication. At European level, we were previously familiar with EN 82079-1:2012 in Edition 1, which was replaced in spring 2019 by ISO/IEC/IEEE 82079-1:2019, Preparation of information for use (instructions for use) of products - Part 1: Principles and general requirements, in Edition 2. The 82079-1 Ed. 2 is to be applied as a horizontal standard for all types of products, regardless of whether these products are electrically powered or not.

Contrary to the sometimes widespread misconception that the standard applies only to electrical products, the standard is also applicable to machines.

As already reported in various publications, ISO 20607 has been in existence since spring 2019, for operating instructions for machinery (this also includes installations, i.e. a set of machines and incomplete machines, note). A standard that reduces itself in the scope of regulation to the 'safety-relevant parts' of the 'user instructions'.

EN ISO 20607 adapts the well-known and legally ambiguous consensus to provide relevant health and safety information exclusively in paper form to the state of the art. ISO 82079-1 also makes it possible to select different media that suit the product and the users (target group, note). These would be:
